The EU Joins the High Ambition Coalition to End Plastic Pollution

The European Union (EU) has joined the High Ambition Coalition to End Plastic Pollution, a global effort aimed at mitigating the effects of plastic pollution on land and water. The EU has already taken action against single-use plastics, plastic packaging, microplastics, and more, aligning with the Coalition’s goal to end plastic pollution by 2040. The strategic goals of the Coalition include restraining plastic consumption and production, enabling a circular economy for plastics, and achieving environmentally sound management and recycling of plastic waste. Critical deliverables for success include banning problematic plastics, establishing global sustainability criteria and standards, and implementing monitoring and reporting throughout the lifecycle of plastics. The negotiations on the new treaty are set to be completed by 2025.

A New Method of Mosquito Control Starts on Lake Tisza

The National Directorate for Disaster Management of Hungary has initiated an effective mosquito control campaign in early April. The first step involves using aerial biological methods to control mosquito populations along the Tisza and Körös rivers and Lake Tisza. This method is considered superior to chemical mosquito control due to its safety and environmental benefits, as chemical control can negatively impact human health, the environment, and develop resistance in mosquitoes over time.

Tisza – Nyírség reservoires

A plan is being prepared to drain river Tisza to the Nyírség area and create reservoirs to hold the water due to droughts caused by climate change. While reservoirs can be beneficial to areas prone to drought, they can disrupt the natural flow of a river and have an impact on the local ecology and wildlife. Regulating Tisza has already destroyed local ecosystems in the past, and the river struggled last summer due to droughts. The plan to modify the natural flow of rivers should take into account both the benefits and potential harms to the environment.
